Prepare Your Neighborhood (PYN)

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Prepare Your Neighborhood is a grassroots effort to raise the level of preparedness among neighborhoods throughout the Nehalem Bay Region. “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” is the underlying principle of the PYN program. In the event of any major emergency or disaster, prepared neighborhoods will be more resilient because of their planning, shared resources, and ability to support one another.

What Is A Cluster?

Clusters are neighborhood groups (anywhere from 50 to 250 households) engaged in the PYN effort of working together to:

  • Learn about emergency preparedness specific to the Nehalem Bay Region

  • Plan for and address their neighborhood’s specific emergency concerns

  • Share resources and expertise

  • Efficiently communicate the neighborhood’s situation during an emergency

  • Offer support and a sense of community in the midst of an emergency and in everyday life

In a disaster some people may be injured and all will be anxious. By joining together we can help boost one another when needed and find comfort in knowing we’re not in this alone.

PYN is committed to strengthening our community’s preparedness by increasing participation in existing clusters and helping to organize new clusters throughout the Nehalem Bay Region. To support this effort please share your information with us.

How Can I Start A Cluster?

Cluster start-up requires a team of committed neighbors willing to take on a leadership role. The start-up process typically takes about 18-24 months while you define your boundaries, identify the households within your area, gather contact information and communicate with the residents and homeowners in your Cluster. There are no “rules” for how a neighborhood may organize itself except that the boundaries should be within a single EVCNB defined Emergency Communications Zone. Emergency Communication will be essential during any disaster and Clusters will play a key role in assessing and reporting the status of their area.

No two Clusters are the same, and the goals and initiatives undertaken may vary. This is especially true for those Clusters situated within the tsunami evacuation zone. Cluster leaders work with their neighbors to promote personal preparedness, build community, and identify Neighborhood Gathering Sites (NGS) where people can come together after a disaster.

Many Clusters stock essential emergency supplies at or near their NGS.
